One Legend states that “The french Classical menu was developed, in that Coffee or Tea was kept as the last course of any meal. Italians prefer to have their galatos at the end of any meal. During an assembly between France and Italy this combination was first tried out. In which Gelato was drowned in a shot of Espresso and everyone Loved the combination hence this is developed.”
Answering the question if it is a beverage or a dessert?
Traditionally Italians consider it as a dessert and it’s served after Lunch or Dinner. But in modern times as what Starbucks Did it popularized this dish as a beverage, therefore its commonly found at cafes now.
How to make?
Affogato is as simple as it appears. There is no science behind pouring a shot of espresso over a scoop of creamy gelato.
It takes only a few minutes to make, as all you need are two ingredients: vanilla or fior di latte gelato and a shot of espresso.
To prepare, put a scoop of ice-cold gelato in a well-chilled glass and pour over with a shot of espresso. The hotness of the espresso will melt the gelato, turning into a bittersweet puddle as it’s eaten. It is essential that the glass and the gelato are ice cold otherwise the hot espresso will melt it very quickly.
Affogato can be eaten as a snack or a dessert after a big meal, first scooping it with a spoon and then drinking what remains.
