How to Clean and Maintain Non-Stick Utensils

Non-stick pans are the most friendly equipment in house. With this type of coating, less oil is needed during cooking, so it's a good choice for the health conscious. Its a good choice for health conscious people as it needs minimal use of oil during cooking because of coating which allows release of food from surface easily. It could be argued that nonstick pans are more user-friendly than some other types of cookware and bakeware. 


In short, nonstick is a time-saver for the busy cook and baker, even given the amount of care they need, to keep the nonstick coating in good condition. With some basic care tips one can easily increase the life of a non-stick pan.


Is Non-stick Coating safe?

There has been a concern in the past about the health risks and safety of nonstick pans, but manufacturers have been quick to revise their construction materials to adhere to safety guidelines when it comes to nonstick coatings. 

That means that chemicals released when a nonstick pan is heated are within acceptable safety standards. Today's manufacturers will stress that their pans are safe to use and meet safety guidelines. 

The safety concern was the leaching of harmful chemicals that could migrate to food contents when the pan was heated at higher temperatures. If Used properly, nonstick pans should not pose a health threat. Even minute chemicals could pose a risk to those who are more susceptible. Using these types of pans is a personal choice.


Ceramic-based nonstick coatings, such as Thermolon, emit no such harmful chemicals and are deemed to be the greener choice. Hence they turn out to be a better choice


Cleaning Procedure

You Will Need:

  •  Non-abrasive nylon scrubber

  • Dish soap

  • Warm water

  • Vinegar

Steps to Remove the Grease:

  1. If there is a layer of oil that is difficult to remove, fill the pan with water and add ½ cup of vinegar.

  2. Bring the water/vinegar mixture to a boil.

  3. As the mixture boils, the oil layer will rise to the top.

  4. Remove the oil and dispose of the water.

  5. Wash the pan with warm water and soap using a nylon scrubber.

  6. Rinse completely and dry with a soft cloth.

  • Non-stick pans are designed to be used with no oils.

  • Avoid using cooking sprays as they can leave a residue that is difficult to remove.

  • Avoid harsh cleaners or abrasive scrubbers. Non-stick surfaces are delicate and can be removed with excessive/harsh cleaning methods.

  • Avoid cooking often on high heat, which can lead to stains or discoloration.

  • If you are unable to wash a cooled pan right away, fill it with water to keep the residue from drying.

  • Do not let any other items touch the non-stick area of the pan during storage. If the pan must be stored with another pan or item nestled inside it, put a cloth or paper towel between the two items to prevent scratches.

  • If there is a white residue on the pan after it has been cleaned and is dry, that is hard water residue. To remedy that you will either need to rinse the pan with filtered or distilled water after cleaning it, dry it by hand, or install a home water softener.
